The Association of Eclectic Physicians takes great pleasure in announcing that it is nominating Dr. Joel Wallach and Dr. Yu Wei Han and Dr. Yu Feng Teng of The Keshan Disease Institute, Harbin Medical University, Barbin, PRC and Dr. Gu, Bo-Qi of the 1st Shanghai Medical School, Shanghai, PRC for the 1991 Nobel Prize In Medicine in consideration of their outstanding contribution in elucidating the pathophysiology of Cystic Fibrosis as a selenium deficiency, and the natural history of that disease as a nutritional deficiency of the human fetus. Not only is this nomination befitting and a tribute to basic medical research for the benefit of man but this nomination is also timely in what the current emphasis is on natural medicine; it should be of special note that Dr. Wallach is a Veterinarian and naturopath Physician and that Drs. Yu Wei Han, Yu Feng Teng, and Gu,Bo-Qi are Medical Physicians. It should also be noted that this project and this nomination makes special note of the combined health sciences used to uncover the congenital nutritional mystery of Cystic Fibrosis. Dr. Wallach’s outstanding work in this connection spans a period of 15 years of research beginning at the Yerkes Primate Institute at Emory University and culminating in the joint work of Dr. Wallach and Dr. Yu Wei Han and Dr. Yu Feng Teng of The Keshan Disease Institute, Harbin Medical University, Harbin, PRC and Dr. Gu, Bo-Qi of the 1st Shanghai Medical School, Shanghai, PRC where the final link between Cystic Fibrosis and Keshan disease, a known selenium deficiency disease, was revealed. The Association has asked the American Association of naturopath Physicians to make this formal announcement on its behalf at its annual convention since Dr. Wallach is a naturopath Physician. This nomination is submitted with our congratulations, respect and hope for continued cooperation and success in the areas of basic research in nutrition and natural medicine.
